Kardinia Inventory Reporter structures the wide range of inventory data into an object-oriented information model. This allows logical grouping of inventory information and allows queries on classes of network and system elements—for example, reports on installed routers from a particular vendor, of a specified hardware model, or specified software level.

In a typical network installation, there is equipment from more than one vendor, and hardware and software changes are necessary to accommodate growth and changing user requirements. Kardinia Inventory Reporter for HP Software gives a network manager the capability to get regular reports on what hardware and software is installed, get reports of changes in installed hardware and software, and perform ad hoc queries to find out details of specific categories of hardware and software. The HP Software network management platform performs discovery of nodes, and Kardinia Inventory Reporter uses this data as a starting point, thus avoiding manual redefinition of nodes or duplication of network discovery. Designed as a client-server application for modularity and scalability, Kardinia Inventory Reporter produces its network inventory reports in web format, as HTML tables.
Features and benefitsA set of standard inventory report definitions is included with the product. However a network manager can extend these by configuring polling of SNMP MIB variables from any standard MIB or any vendor enterprise MIB, to produce additional inventory information for custom reports. This can be done to produce inventory reports on hardware and software features not covered in the reports supplied with the product.
Kardinia Inventory Reporter is installed as one or more Report Clients and one or more Report Servers. A Report Client runs on a Windows® XP or 2000 platform. The client provides a Windows graphical user interface for defining, scheduling, viewing and printing reports. The reports are saved in HTML to a nominated destination that can be a web server. A Report Server runs on Sun Solaris, Windows XP, Windows 2000, and Windows 2003 platforms, and integrates with a copy of HP Software running on the same platform. The Report Server collects inventory data on a regular basis and maintains a database of changes. A configuration file on the Report Server specifies the MIB variables to query to get inventory data. You can add other MIB variables to this file, in order to gather additional data or to gather data from devices that are not covered by the preselected MIBs. The Report Server automatically determines the nodes that it should poll from the HP Software databases and from further analysis of the node capabilities. A Report Client will display a list of the nodes being polled, and the classes of information available for reporting from that Report Server. Reports can be set up for regular automatic production, and can be saved in HTML format, allowing network managers to direct reports to a web server for viewing by different user groups. Report viewing can be integrated with the HP Network Node Manager Report Presenter, so that you can view reports produced by Network Node Manager and by the different Kardinia Software reporting products in the same place.
